Developed in the 1970s, The Haymarket Centre is the older of Leicester's two central shopping malls . A two storey shopping plaza with multi-storey car park above, it contains many well-known high street names. One of these, the electrical store Currys, was established in Leicester in the C19th. Thomas Cook, the originator of packaged travel, also started in Leicester and there is a branch in Humberstone Gate which runs alongside the centre.
The centre also incorporates one of Britain's leading provincial theatres - One of the country's top regional theatres with a wide ranging programme from top West End transferring musicals to ambitious stage classics, new writing and Asian theatre. Many productions originating at the Haymarket Theatre have gone directly to success in London's West End.
