New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is situated within the historic New Walk area of the city of Leicester. The building was originally the Proprietary School and was built in 1837 from the designs of JA Hansom, the inventor of the Hansom Cab. In 1849 the Literary and Philosophical Society formally presented to the town its various collections which form the nucleus of the current museum.
New Walk Museum has been the inspiration for many people including Lord Attenborough and Sir David Attenborough, who pursued their careers in acting and natural history as a result of spending their formative years as regular visitors to the galleries. Today visitors of all ages will be fascinated by the Ancient Egypt gallery with its mummies, coffins and other treasures and by the dinosaurs, rock and fossil collections in the Natural History section.
The museum is a major regional Art Gallery with a notable collection of German Expressionist and European art dating from the 15th century to the present day. The Decorative Arts Gallery, in particular the ceramic collection, illustrate many aspects of social history including materials and techniques used.
The Discovery Room invites younger visitors to try on replica clothes, handle real historical objects and explore the natural world, while the 'Royal Tigers' exhibition tells the colourful and proud story of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment.
The Victorian Gallery is a beautiful venue for weddings. The architecture and interior design of the gallery is magnificent and the moulding of the beautiful ceiling protrays a colour scheme of cornflower blue and gold which offers an overall feeling of romance to your wedding day.
Visitors can now sit back and relax in the Cappuccino Bar and enjoy the varied selection of food and drinks on offer.
